Your skin consists of two layers, the epidermis and the dermis. The epidermis is the outer layer of skin and is a set of dead skin cells on top of another layer of cells that are in the process of maturing, the dermis. 

Skin care products can only moisturize a portion of skin because the top layer acts as a barrier blocking needed ingredients. Microdermabrasion treatments exfoliate the outside layer of skin where fine wrinkle lines and blemishes exist. Microdermabrasion removes this barrier, allowing skin care products to reach the lower layers of skin and become much more effective.  Other visible imperfections, like sun damage, blemishes and fine lines, are also removed during the Microdermabrasion process.
